BASF, a leading chemical company, has initiated construction on a new polyethylene production facility at its Verbund site in Zhanjiang, China. The facility, designed to produce 500,000 tons of polyethylene per year, is set to meet the rapidly increasing demand in the Chinese market. The plant is expected to commence operations in 2025.
Bir Darbar Mehta, the Senior Vice President of Petrochemicals Asia Pacific at BASF, highlighted that China's polyethylene demand is growing at a pace that surpasses the rest of the world. He added that the new plant would allow BASF to tap into the Chinese polyethylene market with a competitive production base at the fully integrated Zhanjiang site. The facility will cater to various sectors, including consumer goods, packaging, construction, and transportation.
Bejoy Chandran, Vice President of Basic Business Management & China Sales Management, Petrochemicals Asia Pacific at BASF, emphasized the strategic location of the Zhanjiang Verbund site. Being fully backward integrated, it is positioned to provide high-quality and reliable polyethylene products for a broad spectrum of durable applications. These include pipes, specialty films, and blow molded parts for household and industrial chemical containers, particularly in the South China market.
